Performing Backup Functions

Registry Easy provides tools to backup files, folders, and Internet Explorer favorites. In addition, restore points can be created on Windows 2000 or XP systems.

Setting a Restore Point

Windows 2000 and XP have the capability of creating and naming a restore point. This is particularly helpful for saving the system configuration before a major action was taken. If the PC becomes unstable, the system can be restored to a previous working state.

Note: You must enable the Windows system restore function to utilize the Restore Point feature. To enable the system restore function, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

To view the latest restore point:

1. From the main window, click Backups and click Restore Point.

2. Click Refresh.

To create a restore point:

1. From the main window, click Backups and click Restore Point.

2. Click Create a Restore Point.

To restore using a restore point:

1. From the main window, click Backups and click Restore Point.

2. Select a restore point.

3. Click Restore.

Backing up Favorites

To backup Internet Explorer favorites:

1. From the main window, click Backups and click Favorites Backup. The Favorites folder structure displays (see Figure 9).

2. To view the folders and files that will be backed up, click the plus sign next to a folder to expand its contents. These items cannot be changed.

3. Click Backup. A dialog box prompts for confirmation. Click Yes to continue.

4. After the backup is complete, a dialog box confirms success. Click OK to exit.

Restoring Favorites

To restore Internet Explorer favorites from a backup:

1. From the main window, click Backups and click Favorites Backup. The Favorites folder structure displays (see Figure 9).

2. Click Restore. A dialog box prompts for confirmation. Click Yes to continue.

3. After the restore is complete, a dialog box confirms success. Click OK to exit.

Backing up Files and Folders

To backup files and folders:

1. From the main window, click Backups and then click Folder Backup to display the Folder Backup window (see Figure 10).

2. Use the folder structure on the left side of the screen to navigate to a file or folder to backup.

3. Click Add to add the file or folder to the list on the right.

4. To remove a file or folder from the list, select it from the right side of the screen and click Remove.

5. Enter a name for the backup in the Name field.

6. Click Browse and navigate to the folder where the backup should be saved and click OK.

7. Select a speed from the Backup Speed drop-down list:

  • Fast – fastest backup time, but takes up the most disk space.
  • Normal – takes up less disk space than Fast, but takes more time.
  • Max – slowest option with the least amount of disk space used.

8. Click Backup. A progress bar indicates the status of the backup.

Note: the backup cannot be canceled after it is started.

A dialog box confirms that the backup is complete.

Restoring Files or Folders

To backup files and folders:

1. From the main window, click Backups and then click Folder Backup to display the Folder Backup window (see Figure 10).

2. Click the Folder Restore tab (see Figure 11).

3. Click Browse to select the backup from which to restore. The contents of the backup display in the Content area.

4. Click the plus signs next to folders to expand folders to view their contents.

5. In the Restore to area, click Browse to select a location where the files and folders should be restored. Navigate to the area and click OK.

Note: if you restore the backup to the original folder where the files are currently stored, Registry Easy will overwrite the files.

6. Click Restore. A progress bar indicates the status of the restore.

Note: the restore cannot be canceled after it is started.

A dialog box confirms that the restore is complete.
